Seven Ways to Recharge in the New Year

A mentor asked me last week, “What are you doing to take care of Seth?”

I stared at him vacantly and mumbled something about adding to my (very tiny) beer cellar and how I was still playing basketball.

His face seemed to say, “Not good enough.”

And my heart agreed. “Not good enough.”

Full disclosure — it’s a busy season. We’re selling a house and buying a house. A new puppy moved home three weeks ago. Basketball season is just underway for my 6th grader. Girl Scouts is in full swing for my 3rd grader.

But it’s a good question to ask ourselves regularly.

“What am I doing to take care of me?”

Here’s a list of seven things I do to refocus and recharge. Maybe you’ll find something on the list you’d like to try also:

  1. Hug someone you love. Physical contact in an eWorld stimulates my mind and soothes my heart.
  2. Write a haiku. A small poem with a simple focus, the haiku forces me to slow down and think about one thing.
  3. Play with a puppy. If only people had the happiness alert signal of a puppy’s wagging tail.
  4. Play basketball. Play unleashes reserves of energy I never knew I had.
  5. Enjoy a good meal. Laughter around the table, rich food against the winter chill, the company of family or friends —  good medicine, all of them.
  6. Call your mom or dad. It’s always encouraging to talk to my biggest fans.
  7. Go for a walk. No matter the destination, walking clears my mind and gets it moving at the same time.
